Sunspots are zones cooler than average and are not truly dark, it's only apparent in contrast with the surrounding zones (unless the colors are modified with computer programs); they are absolutely natural because a star is an extremily dynamic system, and it seems they are linked with an increment in the star activity; anyway this increment also is part of a natural periodic cycle.

They're places on the sun where the temperature is lower than the surrounding of the surface. They also have interactions with the sun's magnetic field. These interactions are poorly understood.
