If you are into snorkeling and diving Cozumel is the island for you. We like Cozumel for a laid back type of island.
The town is adorable and has some really good restaurants. If you want some excitement take a ferry over to Playa Del Carmen.
We stayed at Presidente Intercontinental, and really liked it. Snorkel and diving right in front of the hotel. If you are looking for All-Inclusive check out Grand Cozumel Occidental. Excellent reviews for both resorts.
Cozumel Palace is nice but no beach but a great pool and right on the water.
We rented a jeep and toured the east side of the island. Awesome views, bring your camera. Some island type bar/restaurants on that side of the island.
Wherever you decide, have a great trip.

I traveled to Cozumel, and spent a 7 day and 7 night stay in Cozumel. One side of the island, as of 8 years ago was desolate and gorgeous, with a small scattering of outdoor restaraunts and one bar on the beach.
One side of the island is touristy, and if you are into the nightlife get wild scene, it is happening downtown on the oceanfront.
The diving and snorkeling is wonderful. You can take a dive or snorkling boat out and catch the current while snorkling or diving and drift along in warm clear waters and be totally captivated at the marine life. I would recommend staying in a top rated hotel on the beach, which offers a all inclusive stay including meals. The meals are wonderful if you are into seafood and or Mexican cuisine.
You can rent a dune buggy and travel the island, which is fun, however, all in all, it is a fairly small island. It was worth my trip, however, there are other island resorts, which offer more, I am sure. Good luck on your mutually exclusive decisions.

We just returned from a trip to the Mayan Riviera, we spent a day in Cozumel. I would totally go there again, and stay on the island. We rented scooters and drove around all day and checked out the most beautiful beaches. We had a really great time. Totally worth it, and if you want a change, a 30 minute ferry ride takes you right to Playa del Carmen. Have a good time on your trip!

I agree. If you're into scuba or snorkeling, Cozumel is the place. There is a great dive site over a sunken plane. However, if you're not into those water sports, you would be better off staying on the mainland, and taking a day trip over and back. Check out Isla Mujeures also. Very good day trips.
