I'm not sure what you are asking. If you are asking if GPA is important for getting into a PhD program -- then the answer is Yes. The better the GPA, the better the school that you can get into. It is not as critical as some people think -- you might be able to get into a top PhD program with a GPA over 3.5 or so -- but you would have to have a higher GPA in your major and other things going for you as well.

But if you mean "Is GPA important once you get into the PhD program?" then the answer is -- not so much. You usually have to maintain a minimum average (at UC-Berkeley it is 3.30) -- but it is your dissertation that is really important.

GPA is always important. Some employers use it as a measure of potential in their firm. Do your best to get all A's.
