Here's the lowdown:

Leaving a computer on permanently will help the hard drive and some other components because they are in favour of either a constantyl on or off state. The stress on a har disk is most when booting up or shutting down. So not doing either will make your hard disks last longer.

that said

some cons of leaving it on are electricity costs, and the fact that the longer it is running the slower it will become as junk accumulates in memory. So shutting down can wash your system out a bit. If you use a computer for gaming it can be annoying speed reduction. Also it will make your fan run extra hard, so it preserves the hard disk, but wastes the fan, the hard disk some argue is more important. If a fan busts you will have very little time to turn the computer off before everything overheats. If the computer is in a business environment then i would recommend leaving it on as you do not pay for the electricity and the fan will be replaced by eager tachnicians when it breaks and the important documents on your hard disk will survive (although for exrta security turn it off, as it asks for more passwords from a boot). for home i leave mine on hibernate.

Please do shut it down. This will save much, much energy. There is a story that goes round the business school circuits about the bank worker that noticed that everyone was leaving their computers on overnight, convinced management to institute a shutdown policy, and saved a million $ to the company that year. True or not, in this day and age of energy efficiency, we need to save.

If it takes a long time to boot in the morning (as my laptop does!), boot it up as soon as you come in, go for a coffee, and by the time you're back it will be ready to go. Or, if your lucky, your computer has a self-boot timer in BIOS that will tell it to but at a time you specify (my old Dell desktop at work used to do this).

Leave it on.

When you power up any electronic device, you get what is known as a transient voltage spike. Over time the transient will weaken and damage the electronic components in the computer.Since modern computers employ power management to reduce power requirements, they will go into a power save mode.
Another advantage of leaving the computer on is that you can schedule things like defrag to run automatically late at night when you aren't using the computer.
It is a good idea to to make sure the computer is password protected it it is in an accessible area.

Shutting down your computer will give it time to cool down. Also the longer you have your computer on the more memory it will take up. If you find your computer a bit sluggish, and it has been on for awhile, a quick reboot might help. As far as other people looking on your computer, just log off, you can log back in faster than it takes to boot a computer.

I've always heard that it's easier on the cooling fan if you turn it off at night.
