Ive been on progesterone (prometrium) since about 7 weeks. I had alot of cramping and spotting until about 10 weeks. I had my appt. last week and my dr. said to finish what I have and then I could stop. Im 18 weeks on tuesday and I will be done. Has anyone ever heard of or been on progesterone this long?? Ive read alot woman on this site usually come off it around 12 weeks. Im worried about stopping but Im probably over reacting. Any insight would be great. Also is it ok to stop cold turkey or should I slowly go off them. Im worried about spotting. Thankyou so much.

I'm also getting off of prometrium in a few weeks. Don't worry. The doctors usually want you to take it through the first trimester when its important to have good progesterone levels. The chances of miscarriage greatly decrease during this time and the reason you started to take prometrium, is no longer a concern. Enjoy the rest of your pregnancy!!! =)

Normally you just go off of them cold turkey rather than tapering off. As far as "is it okay to stop", I'd say most docs quit by 12 weeks... but your doctor presumably has been monitoring your progesterone levels (if he prescribed prometrium without progesterone level monitoring, that is a serious red flag) and has decided that now is the best point to take you off of it. It's normal to worry if you've had bleeding in pregnancy... very scary! But don't be ashamed to ask these questions to your doctor: that is what you pay them for.

I was on progesterone suppositories for 14 weeks, my Dr. checked my progesterone levels before taking me off of them. If they have not done so already, ask them if they will check your progesterone levels before coming off of them,if it will make you feel beter about the situation. If progesterone levels come back fine, then you have nothing to worry about. I was worried about coming off of progesterone too, but he made it here healthy and is now 13 months old. Congratulations, everything will be fine.
