I just had central AC installed. The weather has been nice and I haven't had a need for either the heat or the air, but 6 days after the AC was installed, I had to turn on the heat, which didn't work!! Now, the contractor, who was hired by one of the bigger chains, says that it isn't their fault, that my furnace was old anyway. Even though the sales guy that quoted me, told me he'd get the windows replaced before the furnace because the furnace worked just fine. Not to mention my doorbell doesn't work after they rewired everything. It just ticks me off that he is trying to pin this on the furnace and can't just say, yeah, we may have made a mistake. So, whats the likelihood of the furnace actually breaking at the exact time of installation of the AC? Because it worked just fine prior. Am I being unfair in placing blame on these guys or does something not sound right?

Thanks!

It could be several things. If you had no central air before, then he would have to install a new thermostat. There will be a switch on it to change from heating to cooling that was not there before. If it is a gas furnace did they kill the pilot before putting the evaporator in the funace. These are just guesses since there is not much detail in your question.

Well.. you made the choice to retain the furnace instead of replacing it at the same time as the A/C. Keep in mind that the replacement of the A/C will jostle and move around the furnace and if there was a part that was 'just about' to break.. this extra movement may have finished it off. You can't really blame this on the A/C guys because this was a part just waiting for the right excuse to break. We recently purchased a home in which we had to make the same decision as the A/C needed replacement... since the furnace was the same age... we replaced both. The cost to do so was minimul compared to the over all cost and the cost to replace at a later date.

Now.. I do wonder that when the origininal work was done if YOU tested the systems (AC and furnace) before the techs left? If so.. did they both work then? If they worked then.. the A/C guys didn't do it. If you didn't test it.. well... that was a lesson learned.

Hope this helps.

The furnace may have broken at a different time than the installation of the AC because you said that it was 6 days after the AC was installed that you tried to use it.

well, seeing that it is not the 50's you can rule out the pilot(furnaces dont have those anymore there frozen)

call up that contractor and tell them that you wont put up with that, tell them to get over there and check the system out. if the furnace got you all the way through the winter then apparently the furnaces age was not the issue.

If "one of the bigger chains" means Lowes or Home Depot - they have a 100% satisfaction policy...meaning that if ONE person complains about a contractor they will never use that contactor again. Tell the contractor who screwed up that you know this and threaten to tell the chain, and they will most likely fix whatever they broke. Don't settle for anything less than perfect. This happened to me last year, I threatened to tell Home Depot - they were at my house two hours later.
