Im looking to purchase a vehicle, and when ive checked it out seems decent, except my relative who went with me, said that when he lifted up the oil cap to look in the container, it had a bit of a smoke blowback, and he has heard that is a bad sign. But wasnt sure what it means. What does it mean, and why is that a bad sign?

i own a repair shop, and it could just mean it has a bad pcv valve on it,but this can also mean it has blow by,and this means it has a lot of miles on it,this could mean its going to need internal engine repair work done to it later on,which could mean a lot of money to be spent on it,,it shouldn't have a lot of blow by on it though ,any engine shouldn't,so be careful on this one,you could be buying a problem here ,good luck i hope this helps.

Any sort of positive airflow from the crankcase is a sign of blow-by at the piston rings. In any case, you shouldn't see any smoke coming from the oil fill port. I'd pass on this one for sure because you're about to buy a lemon.

The pvc valve connects to a vacuum hose and draws air out of the engine to keep in ventilated and keep it from pressurizing. If it's bad or the vacuum line is off, the engine will be a little pressurized and liable to start blowing seals. You always get a little blowby past the rings.

If a car has blow by it could also mean the rings on the pistons are weak and have wear, if that be the case it would take several dollars to repair the engine.

Good Luck,

It could be from the rings being bad or, problems with the valves not seating correctly. I would pass on the vehicle and find one that will need less work.

it could be because the motor was too hot and is burning the oil and that is bad brcause the vehicle could overheat and you coul get stranded or sumthing

may or may not.
but the P.C.V .valve is bad for sure.

my suggestion.... make the engine run without the top oil cap and see if there is "excessive blow bye gas"
