The government has recently introduced the child trust fund (http:www.childtrustfund.gov.uk) where the government gives a total of £2,500 by the time the child is 18 into an account which parents, relatives etc can also contribute to. The key thing is that the parents cannot touch the money and nor can the child until they are 18.
However, through the tax credits system, parents of children end up paying much less tax than people with exactly the same wage but without any children.

If you qualify, you get the Sure Start Maternity Grant of £500, then you get child benefit of £17.45 shortly to rise to £18.10 per week, and child tax credit (Don't know this amount)on top of those.
Have a chat with someone in the job centre to look at everything that you are eligible for.
You can also get milk vouchers for £2.80 per week, with which you can buy milk, baby formula and fresh fruits/vegetables.
The baby will get a voucher for £250 that must be put into a Child Trust Fund, and that can be be contributed to by you, and will be given further payments from the government when the child reaches certain ages.

people are so bloody rude and annoying, just because somone askes a question doesn't mean that they are going to have a baby for the money it's just a question!!!! you can get a government grant for about £500 if you have a low income, child benefit it £18.10 a week from April and child tax credit it £50 a week until your baby is 1 then it will £40.

You can get maternity money but you have had to be working for a certain length of time first. All to do with your contributions that you pay through your national insurance stamp. If you haven't worked then you don't get maternity money. You may, however, qualify for a maternity grant, so you can buy items for your baby, if you are on Social Security Benefits.

I don't know why people insist on giving sh itty answers when they don't know the full story!! Yes you get money from the government when you have a child in the UK. You get Child Benefit which I think is about 40-50pounds a month and you might also get Child Tax Credits depending on your income, these usually amount to about 40-50pounds amonth also. I get both of these and I am in a happy marriage with a hard working professional husband. We don't live in a council house and neither of us are unemployed so not every mother who claims benefits are council scum ok!?

depends how old you are , you can apply for a grant to help towards cost of pram and cot the grant is for £500 but if your working you wont get it , you will also get a Monday book ( that's what every body calls it now) not sure on how much you get but its not much you also get a milk token weather it be used for the powder milk for the child or for fresh milk from milkman .
but if your a teen having a baby and still living a home with parents the money you get for the baby is given to your mother then its up to her weather she gives it to the baby's mother or she gets the baby's things herself.
