I was working as a cashier in a small town. One elderly woman purchased a bunch of stuff and I was feeling extra helpful that day so I carried the order to her car for her and even put everything in the trunk for her. She was very suprised and thankful!

I was in retail sales (kitchen ware) and when my customers came to the store I would listen to what they needed and then ask them what thier budget was. I would also be sure to ask them if they need something that would compliment the item they were buying.
We had a couple of very difficult women come in one day to make a purchase. One of my co-workers was having a very difficult time with them. They were quite contrary and argumentative. I had been watching and they started to walk out, I went over and asked them if I could help them. They started complaining about knives. So I took them to the knive cabinet and told them everything I knew about knives. I explained the difference between the carbon steel and the stainless. I explained the hardening process and what that will mean in quality for the knives. I asked them if they would sharpen regularly and what kind of cutting board they used. By the time they were done they not only bought the full set of the high end knives but an electric sharpener and a new cutting board and a magnetic strip to hold the knives. Since they were traveling I arranged to have all items mailed (at not cost) to their destination. All that from a couple of women who were walking out the door.
Another woman came in to buy a mixer I first asked if they were going to use it daily, and what their budget was and she told me she was trying to gently break into specialty cakes and pastry's from home. So I suggested a couple of mixers to fit her budget and explained the differences, then suggested a second bowl so that she could work faster and a bowl cover that would help with the mess and storage. I also showed her several of the other attachments that she could add on later. Then I showed her pastry decorating books and tools. She ended up buying the top of the line, the extra bowl and cover and decorating tools, then we held it till she finished her shopping and took it out to her car when she came back. I also gave her a listing for a company that provides parts for all kinds of older equipment. She was so thrilled that she came back a week later and bought almost all the attachments for her new mixer, and brought her mother-in-law with her who purchased over $700 of pots and pans and utinsels. Over the five years that I worked there I had many, many customers that came back again and again to see me. My boss loved me. :o)

Anytime you have a disgruntled customer come into your facility, no matter what type, if you can provide them with the satisfaction they need, so that they leave happy to have met you, THAT is excellent customer service.

When I worked in an historical attraction, I greeted a woman coming into the centre. She asked loads of various questions and I was able to give fully detailed answers. When she had finished in the exhibition, I helped her in the shop as she was having trouble finding a gift to take back home to Canada. Then she wanted to film me giving her information. Then she was leaving the building as I finished work and was unsure of where to go for a B&B. As it was on my route home, I told her she could follow me to the street with many B&Bs. I have many other examples, but this one sticks out in the head the most. I found her slightly annoying lol. :-P
