I certainly can not live off just £434.00 per month. Please can someone let me know if I've got this all wrong.

You will not qualify for SMP as you won't have been employed for long enough.

In the UK, to get Statutory Maternity Pay you must have been:
~Employed by your employer into the qualifying week which is the 15th week before the week your baby is due.
~Employed by the same employer without a break for at least 26 weeks into the 15th week before the week your baby is due. Part weeks count as full weeks.
~Earning before tax an average of £84.00 a week.

For babies due on or after 1 April 2007 SMP is paid for a continuous period of up to 39 weeks.
~The First 6 weeks you are paid 90% of your average weekly earnings.
~The remaining 33 weeks Standard rate or a rate equal to 90% of your average weekly earnings. You will get whichever rate is lower.
The Standard Rate is £108.85.

Yes you are entitled to maternity pay, you have to be working with your employer for six months before the baby is born so this can include when you are pregnant.

Yes you will only get that amount of money and maternity leave is for 9 months now.

They are other benefits you can claim for depending on the household imcome you can ring the inland revenue and they will discuss with you the amounts.

Also go onto the Acast website for maternity rights.

Have you been working previously? Your maternity money is worked out by the number of national insurance contributions you have paid. Not enough - no money. Find out by contacting your Social Security Dept. They will give you all the information you require. If you do not qualify then you will receive Social Security until you return to work. They will help out with rent, community tax and you may qualify for a maternity grant to help you buy things for the baby, it is not much though, probably less than maternity money. They will also be able to advise you regarding child care if you wish to return to work.

You will also be entitled to Child Tax Credits, Child Benefit and, if you are renting, Housing Benefit (depending on the rent. If you can sort out your tax credits before your baby is three months old, you may be entitled to a Sure Start maternity Grant too (if yours is the only income). That is if you get SMP. Talk to your employer as soon as you can to work out how much you will get and start saving. Babies are cute but expensive!

Good luck and congratulations!

As you were already pregnant when you started with your employer, they don't have to give you statutory maternity pay. However, you can claim maternity allowance for up to 9 months.
This is at a maximum of £108.50 a week.
So, you haven't got it all wrong. That's what you will get.
If you are on a low income, you are also entitled to income support and a maternity grant. You should check with your local job centre what you are entitled to.

no you haven't got it wrong - we all have the same problem - you'll get plenty of answers - more definitive than mine - but i believe if you were already pregnant by the time you started work - your employer doesn't have to pay you anything . even if they did - they'd just pay you 90% of your salary for 6 weeks and then the 108.50.
Start Saving now!

most likely you will not qualify. I was a month pregnant when my benefits took effect and I am not qualifing to get paid maternioty leave. A lot of places would say that if you are pregnant then get hired or your benefits then its a pre existing condition. It sucks. My boyfriend is going to support me whie i'm not working and so will my parents. Good luck!

shouldn't you ask your employer? But for me, I had to be a ful-time employee, and worked with the company at least a year, and I only got 75% of my pay, unless I had PTO, and sick days I wanted to use

most jobs wont give maternity pay unless you have there insurance and wont pay if it was a pre condition you were already pregnant when you started so i think you will get nothing
