Go to: www.gmail.com and sign up for a Gmail account, no invitation required and completely free.
GoogleTalk is very good, but if you want Video too, try Skype, also free.

You register for one but then you have to pay but if somebody invites you then it is free so gety one of your friends or someone 2 invite you.
