the information they contain doesn't necessarily have to be up to date to be helpful so no, they're not.

I believe so. I do lots of research on the web. What a waste of time to go somewhere for info, only to find its gone, sometimes, many years ago. Lots of deadwood on the net. They should be eliminated if they are inactive for a year.
The most atrocious, are listings from e-Bay. Search for an item, using Google or some other search engine, you will see what I mean.
Thanks for bringing this subject up. I find delays very annoying.
