Back to Shakespeare, in the column which lists the character speaking, if a male actor was ready to perform, he would enter (the listing would say - so and so enters DRAG [dressed as girl]

If you are wondering where I got this informaiton from, it was from the movie CARLA & CONNIE, (character Queen with no name) R Keiser explains this while walking.

cheers,

The term drag queen originates in Polari, a subset of English slang that was popular in some gay communities in the early part of the 20th century. Drag meant "clothes", and was also theatre slang for a woman's costume worn by a male actor. Queen refers to the trait of affected royalty found in many drag characters.

I believe it's an old theater term back when theater actors were all male and when the role called for a female a male would "DRess as A Girl"
