I just did the 3 hour glucose test (I scored 140 on the first test). My doctor told me no food for 12 hours prior and only sips of water.
You may feel sick. My stomach hurt after the glucose drink and I became light-headed after the second time they took my blood. We went out to lunch after all of it and I became very light headed in the restaurant. Bring water with you and ask for a room so you can lay down. I would also recommend getting someone to go with you.

Don't worry your mind over it. The less stress you have, the better off you will be..
6 out of my 9 friends failed the first glucose test, then passed the 3 hour glucose test. I too failed the first, passed the second. They said I just barely squeezed by though. The other girls were fine.
Research is being done on why there is such a rise with people failing the first test and then passing the second.
They are trying to narrow it down to our diets. Many people beleive that the reason why this happens so much in the area I live is because all of these friends that I mention have a diet where they consume lots of white rice. I don't consume as much as they do, but i eat a lot of pasta which is very starchy as well. So theres no telling, but like i said before, i wouldn't stress over it too much. Just follow your instructions, take the test, and get your results.

I had the 1 hour test done 4 weeks ago, They didn't tell me that I could'nt eat anything, I ate a snickers bar 5 min before I took the test and my sugar level was 145. I did not do the three hour test because I knew it was high because of the candy bar. I don't think you should be concered just don't eat after 9 just drink water. GOOD LUCK!!

eek! you sound exactly like me! (read my last 3 questions! :)
I failed the 1 hour last week! I have to go in tomorrow and do the 3 hour! my level was 158. I'm freaking out!
They said, you have to add extra carbs to your usual diet for 3 days before the test. They gave me options.
examples:
*(eat 2 extra pieces of bread and 16 oz. of orange juice one day)
-OR-
*(eat 2 extra corn tortillias and 10 oz of apple juice one day)
-OR-
*(eat 1 cup cooked rice and 2 small bananas one day)
** you can do any combination of that .. or the same one everyday**!
I'm doing the two pieces of bread and orange juice everyday because its simple and its already at my house :)
The reason you have to eat those extra carbs is to make sure you are putting enough carbs and sugar into your body before the test to see if your body can produce the insulin to deal with it.
Well, looks like we're in the same boat! I've been stressed all weekend over failing my test :(
Look at my questions .. I've posted about it the past couple days. (read the answers they gave me, it might give you some peace of mind :)
From what I hear .. a lot of people fail the first and pass the second with flying colors. Just try not to stress .. they say that STRESS will raise your sugar levels too!
Good luck to you! (and to me! :)
God bless!

I also failed my 1 hr test. I had to go in a week later and take the three hour test. They told me to fast for 8 hrs prior to test. So no food or drink except for water after midnight. I passed the test just fine. However it was so long and boring sitting there for over 3 hours. What they do is draw your blood when you get there for a fasting blood sugar amt. then they make you drink that nasty drink, wait an hour and get more blood drawn, wait another hour and get more blood drawn, and then another hour and more blood drawn. Long process!!! Good luck hope all turns out well for you.

yes you should. when i was pregnant back in 2002 i failed my first test with 3rd pregnancy my sugar was high they told me to fast as well because you may have had something in you that produced extra sugar along with the test. when i went in after my fast i took the test and immediately threw up the solution. i tried again and did the same thing and i was automatically diagnosed with having gestational diabetes. in all actuality you are suppose be under 120. i also had 2 more children after that and never did the glucose test because of my sugar levels not being accurate in the beginning. after each pregnancy i was fine.
if you are still high then it means your body is taking in too much sugar and is not directing none to the baby or directing too much to baby she the child can be hypoglycemic or very large to deliver and other complications. don't worry too much until you take the other test. if you want to know more just send me a message.

I just went through the same thing. Failed my one hour and went for my 3 hour test this morning. They did not tell me to eat a special diet before hand...just told me to eat regularly so that the test will be accurate according to the way you normally eat and drink. You wouldn't want the test to show up better than it actually is because you've been "behaving" and watching what you eat in preparation for the test. My fasting ended up being too high so they didn't even go through with the 3 hour test. I was referred immediately to an OB/GYN who specializes in gestational diabetes.

I have never heard anything of a "special" diet. I am on my 3rd child. My sugar levels are EXTREMELY low (45) last time they checked. If you fast for 8 hrs before you should get good results if there is no problem. I cannot fast for more than 3 hrs without having problems as mine is so low though :)
