It's not. America is a Republic. That means you have representatives to speak for you. These are our Congressmen/women. A true democracy would put every issue up to vote by the voters.
There are 2 major political parties, Democrats and Republicans.
Democrats are supposed to be the party of the downtrodden, poor, minorities, unions, etc. They believe government should take care of these folks. Therefore, government should take private property and your money, via taxes, to pay for these programs.
Republicans are supposed to be the party of the rich (which we all want to be), businesses (which we want to own), and they want individual responsibility. Therefore, government would be smaller, there would be less taxation, and local community based groups would help those in need, not Washington, DC. (Community based organizations were VERY successful in assisting others prior to FDR and Big Government.)
In fact, by design, our government is very inefficient. Because of the two parties, our representatives end up spending about half their time fighting for power for their party, and less time on the issues.
A great example? Right now our Congress is spending an inordinate amount of time on the firing of 8 U.S. District Attorneys. Meanwhile we have: War in Afganistan and Iraq, Immigration issues, healthcare issues, Social Security issues, traffic, pollution, trade inbalances, crime, and more.
Hope this helps.

Being a Democrat is no more looked down upon than being a Republican. What you are reacting to is partisan rhetoric. Both sides of the political divide try to paint the other as bad. This is because it is much easier to discredit an opponent than to actually address the issues they raise. The United States is not a true democracy. It is instead a representative republic. In a true democracy the people would vote individually on every issue. This is not practical on a country wide scale, so instead we elect representatives to vote on those issues for us.

re·pub·lic:A political order whose head of state is not a monarch and in modern times is usually a president.
A nation that has such a political order.

A political order in which the supreme power lies in a body of citizens who are entitled to vote for officers and representatives responsible to them.
A nation that has such a political order.
often Republic A specific republican government of a nation: the Fourth Republic of France.
An autonomous or partially autonomous political and territorial unit belonging to a sovereign federation.
A group of people working as equals in the same sphere or field: the republic of letters.

Democratic: Of, characterized by, or advocating democracy: democratic government; a democratic union.
Of or for the people in general; popular: a democratic movement; democratic art forms.
Believing in or practicing social equality: "a proper democratic scorn for bloated dukes and lords" (George du Maurier).
Democratic Of, relating to, or characteristic of the Democratic Party.

DON'T SWALLOW THESE REPUBLICAN LIES: A republic and a Democracy is the same thing. But they pervert it in order to justify the overthrow of Democratic leadership in foreign countries so they can use slave labor and cheat people out of a living wage and get their products cheaply. They depend on people not knowing what a 'Democracy and a Republic ' means.
They look down on Democrats because they believe in fairness and justice. And those things cut into their bottom line and an educated public means they can't get away with many of their crimes and it makes them angry.

Being a democrat is not looked down upon by democrats (i would suppose)

There are many forms of democracy, democracy alone can't describe America. We are a Constitutional Federal Representative Republic with a Presidential system and a Bicameral legislature. I don't think even that says it all.

Individual freedom is the dream of our age. It's what our leaders promise to give us, it defines how we think of ourselves and, repeatedly, we have gone to war to impose freedom around the world. But if you step back and look at what freedom actually means for us today, it's a strange and limited kind of freedom.

Politicians promised to liberate us from the old dead hand of bureaucracy, but they have created an evermore controlling system of social management, driven by targets and numbers. Governments committed to freedom of choice have presided over a rise in inequality and a dramatic collapse in social mobility. And abroad, in Iraq and Afghanistan, the attempt to enforce freedom has led to bloody mayhem and the rise of an authoritarian anti-democratic Islamism. This, in turn, has helped inspire terrorist attacks in Britain. In response, the Government has dismantled long-standing laws designed to protect our freedom.

1. We are a democratic republic.

2. The Democrats are just a name the party took on because it sounds good. In reality, they are in favor of taking the property of private citizens.

The reason we are to look down on liberals is because of their willingness to sell out America's future for political expedicy, they have no core values except abortion, gun control and no God at all. Conservatism is the best way to get America back to where it should be with low taxes, freedom and gun rights. Democrats are haters of America
