The three are primordial symbols of human nature. Here are some insights that cross cultures and that are prevelant in religion, philosophy, literature, and psychology. Darkness relates to that which remains hidden, unexamined, unknown or even deceptive and malicious. It is related in the self to the unrealized and unresolved potentialities that can give rise to chaos. Light represents truth and the radiance of wisdom and knowledge. It is equated with awareness, reason, truth and order. Darkness and light are often presented as contrasts of each other, representing contradictory aspects of the self. Water is a symbol of human consciousness itself, a metaphor for the fluidity, depths, and unpredictability of the self, particularly of the emotions.

Water, one of the four elements, is a symbol of femininity; it is very receptive and nurturing. In ancient cultures, fountains/ water always symbolizes the Mother god.
Light is information and it takes away darkness and ignorance. There are many levels to it, of course.

They represent understanding by force and/or wisdom.

You know when it is by force when you cannot understand and you suffer for it. You know when it is by wisdom when you feel it(no doubt, you know it) and you're happy for it.

Three root forces exist in the world: Air, water and fire. Heaven was created from fire, earth was created from water, and the air moves between them......Sefer Yetzira.

GRAMMER!!! "ARE darkness, light, water..."

And sure, they can be symbolic, but there's no such thing as human nature.

Too vague. Try again.
