chickens have descended from wild fowl which were able to fly. but when domesticated they lost their need to fly because they got their food and protection from us. special muscles in their wings that 's function is to give enough thrust for them to take off and stay in the air without fatigue became weaker.
they became heavier too. but at the same time they got stronger legs as a part of adaptation to life on land. but chickens can still fly as high as a medium height tree or atleast to the roof of their penn.

They can. However, domesticated chickens can't because of the way they've been bred. They've been bred for maximum breast meat potential, and not for flying. However, people do have chickens for pets and those chickens actually prefer to roost in trees at night. Most can fly for short distances but not gracefully nor well.

Some varieties of chicken can fly at least to the top of nearby trees. When they are young it is necessary to 'clip their wings' (like some teenagers?). Clipping only one side works well because they can't attain balanced flight.

chickens can fly. As well as wild turkeys. Domestic turkeys can't fly due to the inbreeding that has produced the overgrwon, white meat breasts.

They can...just enough to get lift off. Like all birds, they roost at night, so they fly just enough to get up off the ground. In the mornings, sometimes we'd find them on my dad's truck.
