I think your bang on there, but I think it is that the dog begins to look like their owner rather than the other way around.
I have noticed it in a lot of dogs and their owners but the funniest one is my dad and his pug dog beano they are the absolute spitting image lol, not literally of course but anyone can see the resembelence.

I think its to do with attraction. Nature makes us find simular attractiveness attractive. So I think when people are picking a dog, subconsciously they are looking for something that looks simular to them. I think this sounds very weird, and made more sense in my head. Not sure if to post this answer or not.

Not every dog & owner look alike but I have definitely seen a lot that closely resemble each other.
