Used most often to withdraw from heroin and sometimes for chronic pain control. But since there are much better drugs for pain control, it is not used very often for that.

Highly respected MD in Los Angeles (Director of a pain management center) tells me Methodone is highly effective with relief of severe pain due to cancer that has spread to the bone. Much more effective than demoral, morphine, etc.He says it is also inexpensive, but that doctors (as demonstrated by some of the above answers) are unfamiliar with how helpful it is when there is such difficult pain.

It is used to treat Chronic Pain, and it is also used to block opiate receivers in the brain,... it blocks parts of the brain, so that drug users can't get high from opiate drugs... heroin, Oxycontin, etc. so it is a method to help break the drug addition. Most who use it find it addictive as well, ever seen the line at a methadone clinic?
