Its a little difficult to put hard and fast dates on it, as it was more a movement than a historical period.

The first writer of the Renaissance is normally accepted to be Dante Alighieri who was writing around 1300.

The Renaissance, generally speaking, finished when the Reformation started, and we can trace that to Luther's publication of the "95 Theses" in 1517.

So, on the basis of the above............217 years.

People shift the dates for the beginning and end of the Renaissance apparently to suit there own way of thinking. There is no true beginning and no true end to the Rennaisance, there is also little difference politically between medieval and Renaissance society. In a way there is no real way to answer this question. I have heard dates for the Renaissance ranging from beginnings 1300, 1400, 1492 and endings ranging nearly as far, some place the end sometime around 1600, while others say it was over around the year 1520.
