"....By the end of 1854 he was back in upstate New York, where an uncle in Buffalo hired him to assist in compiling a herd book of shorthorn cattle...."

The "..wrote a book about cows.." part is a bit tricky.
I don't think Cleveland actually authored a book about cows.
Most all references skim over a short period of of his early life where he was hired temporarily by an Uncle who had a major dairy farm.
Prior to that Cleveland had been employed in a store,,and had been involved with the accounting/records keeping at the store.
Cleveland's uncle apparently had Cleveland to either Create,,or Edit,,or Update the farm's Cattle Herdbook.
As best as I can determine.
A Herdbook is sorta like a family tree of all the lineage and pedigrees of the animals in the herd.
It's a comprehensive biography of the cattle.
It details all sorts of facts and info used in managing the herd.
Breeding,Cross breeding,,documents births,,ages,,milk/meat production,etc,,vaccinations,,vet care,,,and so on
I suspect this is the "book about cows" Cleveland is said to have been involved with writing.
Not a Book in common terms,,but more of an "accounting book/ledger"
