Kinda like astrology, tarot, etcetera.
Using numbers just makes it seem more rational, but it is still bogus.
Numerology is best thought of as a symbolic way of communicating rather than a "mystical" answer. For example, there are many numbers used symbolically, such as three, and seven. These are meant to convey a meaning, just like a metaphor is used in literature. Bach's Mass in B Minor is a good example of using numerology as metaphor to add meaning to a work of (in this case) music. For example, the "resurexit" movement has lots of triplets (groups of three notes) used symbolically to represent the three days from Good Friday to Easter for the resurrection of Christ. However, though it does lend it a "secret" meaning, it does NOT have mystical powers.

Like any method of divination, numerology provides a set of symbols which can be used to subjectively interpret, categorize, and provide context for our lives and the things and people in them. As such, "truth" in the objective sense is largely irrelevant - the question is, are you willing to invest the belief to make the symbols work for you, or, alternatively, the time and effort to discover your own symbolic correspondances?
