NfromVT is correct. Now is a good time to sow grass seed, but you must cover the seeds with something (like hay) to keep them drifting away or being eaten. You can get hay pretty cheap. Check out a local farm supply store.
As far as your trees, unless you live in a rainy climate like Seattle, you need to water them often. Try to water them at least once or twice a week, depending on rainfall, until they get big enough to fend for themselves. If your climate is dry, also invest in a lawn sprinkler to water the baby grass as it grows.

You will need to cover the grass seed with either some topsoil or straw to keep the birds from eating it or getting washed away with rain. The trees require a lot of water for about a month. If you have clay soil, make sure you add a loose packing soil below the roots. Cover the roots with about half the soil you will be using and then fill the hole with water. Whenit drains into the soil, fill in the rest of the hole and dump a couple gallons of water on it. Water once a week after, making sure you thoroughly saturate the soil.

make sure you lay down some hay or something over the seed, or the birds will just make off with all of it. the two trees should be given plenty of water, especially if you're in a drier climate w/ lots of sunshine. you need to prevent them from going into shock. I'd look into some plant food.

try throwing down some compost or a thin layer of topsoil. Another thing that might work is annual rygrass. grass seems to sprout better when there already is some. annual rygrass comes up fast then dies at the end of the year. put some of it down will give you some grass fast and you can plant other grass in it.
