I licked a piece of dry dog food once, when I was 11 or 12.
Taste just like it smells, it's kinda like cardboard.
The brand was Pedigree.
There is a such thing as cat food tasters. (As a job)
Not sure about dog food, I'm sure they got someone.

When I was 1 or 2 I used to eat the dogs food. The crunchy kind. My mom would hit me on the back of the head and say ,"Spit it out". Oh, that sounds too familiar with the time......

You better believe it... I tried Beggin' strips.. tasted a little like beef jerkey but not really. Milkbones are gross.. and I tried those like slim jim things. They're strictly for dogs, but some of them look really good. Also, Petco has these like doggie cookies, and they tasted like regular cookies. Actually, they were pretty good.

No and I would not do it now with the recall on pet foods or you may get poisened by what has made all those poor animals die
