Because (I think) often circulation problems are shown in the feet and legs, especially if there are blood clots etc. This can signify heart problems.

My guess is she had gang green and it would have spread to the rest of her body since her legs had to come off.
I'm no doctor so I weren't truly know but I do watch a lot of medical, law shows. Why don't u ask a family member like your Mom. She could tell u. Not any of us since none of us on here has ever met your Aunt.

Maybe she had bone cancer or was a diabetic and had developed an ulcer at the bottom of her foot, which turned into gangrene. Or a blood clot. They took the legs off so you could bury your aunt while they continue to investigate her cause of death. This way the can disect the legs to see what her circulation was like and if her cause of death was due to a clot, or heart ailment

Actually if someone dies of an unknown cause (Such as Anna Nichole Smith) they'll disassemble the entire body, take samples of the entire body and send it to various labratorys to find out what the pathology was.
I suspect if they removed her legs, they were looking for evidence of diabetes due to vein and artery damage, and maybe gangrine. But this is only a guess- you might ask around to find out
