Well some believe that if a woman has a more tomboyish look, that she's a lesbian. I have found this to be untrue. Not ALL tomboyish women are lesbians. BUT that sometimes is a good indicator that she MAY be one. My girlfriend is a stud (black version of a butch lesbian) & no one ever questions her sexuality because they automatically assume it. Now everyone is shocked when they find out i'm one, because im very feminine. So there's really no 100% sure proof way of identifying a lesbian unless she's walking around in some type of pride clothing/rainbow jewelry, etc.... I have shirt that says "If you're a man, i dont wanna date you. But i'd love to meet your sister."
That pretty much lets them know :-)

Watch the first season of "The L Word", one of the episodes is devoted to that question.
Then again, there is also "gaydar"...

ah yes.. it may be hard to tell but if she is on top of another woman.. i would call it safe to assume

You can't, you can only make assumptions based upon appearance.
