My desktop is about 5 years old and has finally died on me before I could transfer my files. How do I get my files, specifically my music files off my computer and on to another one if my computer wont turn on? Is it a matter of removing my hard drive to another computer and if so, how do I do that? Please please please help.

Depends on what died on your system, if it was the hard drive that died on you may be SOL but if it was something else that died you may be able to remove that old hard drive and slave it to a new one on your pc. Or something that might be a little easier for you is to get an adpapter that will convert your hard drive into a usb hard drive. Then it's just a matter of plugging it into a usb port and copying the files over to your new system.

As long as your Hard Drive isn't damaged you can transfer the HD to your new PC

- Open both cases.
- Remove the old Hard drive
- on the back of the old HD there are jumper pins.
- Set the old drive to slave.
- A pin chart should be on top of your hard drive.
- Install the old HD into the new pc
- Connect the IDE to the old HD
- The IDE leading to the new HD will have a 2nd connector..
- Plug a power connector into the old HD.

- Turn on the PC
- Watch the start up screen. See if the old HD was detected.
- If its not check the bios and HD jumper pin.

good luck!

Your old computer will have a parallel ATA disk connected to the motherboard with a flat cable. New computers have Serial ATA on a thin cable but some also have PATA connections. Just plug it in if there. Alternative is to buy an external USB Parallel ATA disk enclosure (with power supply).

If the other PC only has PATA, there will be a spare cable connector. You might have to change a jumper at the rear of the disk from Master to Slave.

The disk will be held in by 4 screws (sometimes 2) and will have flat cable and power connectors.

Yes, you can move your hard drive to another computer, connect it and access it.

The easiest way, may be to get a device that allows you to attach a hard drive and connect to another PC via USB connection. I've done this many times and it works great.

Here is one to give you an idea:
