Impatients not only bloom in the shade, but they also flourish in the shade becoming a rounded full container of colorful blooms. Other great shade accents are ferns and also Hosta's, but stay away from Hosta's if you have deers.
Here's a great site for some more wonderful shade plantings:

Astilbes are a perennial that will bloom in shade, white pink, red. Lily of the valley loves shade but can be poisonous to children or pets, if eaten. Smells heavenly too! I have hostas and the deer here don't seem to bother them as much as the daylilies which still manage to grow back after having been nibbled on.
Is it a deciduous tree? If so, you can still have a glorious display of spring flowering bulbs before the tree leaves out.
Sweet woodruff is an interesting groundcover with nice texture with a whorled leaf that blooms with small white flowers in May. Dried leaves also smell a bit like vanilla. Snow on the mountain is a variegated leaf and also a spreading ground cover. All these are perennials.
Happy gardening!

Bleeding Hearts are good shade plants, they bloom early spring. Astilbe bloom in the summer are are another good blooming shade plant.
Your can get colour all summer with caladium, no blooms to speak of but, the leaves are colourful and they love the shade.
Primrose also like the shade, there again they are spring blooming.
Begonias love the shade and bloom from summer to fall.
Cyclamen bloom late summer, the leaves are heart shaped and are variegated.
Astreantia blooms all summer, another shade flowering plant.

Hope this helps. PS These are perennials except for the Begonias, you need to dig up the tubers and replant them the next spring.

impatiens. An annual (i.e. you plant them every year). Very popular because they bloom in the shade, plus are absolutely covered with color - from late spring through frost.

You can buy them at any nursery - though it may be a bit early right now (plant them when danger of frost is past). Each individual plant will grow until it fills not quite 1 square foot. They sell them in flats - which usually have at least 48 inidividuals.

pansies are good too, they like the cold, same with petunias, and petunias smell good.
