Security software is necessary but difficult to "compute" with. I have found that very large security software solutions take over a vast amount of system resources making your computer very slow in all actions. (even slower than if you had viruses that their trying to protect you from) Two examples of this are Symantec's Norton and McAfee.
A very unintrusive anti-virus is TrendMicro's PC-Cillon. It runs in the background, and takes up a lower amount of resources. PC-Cillon costs about $35 a year.
Personally, all i use is Windows Firewall, and AdAware. Both are free. I'm also very careful about what i view on the internet, and i do NOT USE ANY P2P PROGRAM such as limewire.

Let's divide the answer in three sections:
The first one will be free security programs. For an antivirus I would recommend AVG. For a firewall you can use zonealarm or Comodo pro. For a spyware program the best is Spybot. (You can download them from www.download.com)
The second section is about security programs that you must buy. For an antivirus you can use nod32 (the best). For firewall you can buy zonealarm professional or kerio firewall. For spyware you can buy the fantastic spysweeper.
The third section includes security programs which you can purchase and the advantage of them is that they have anticvirus, firewall, spyware all in one. There are many out there, such as norton, mcaffe, panda,bitdefender.... The two that I suggest are bitdifender and kaspersky all in one!

i assume you mean anti-virus software. i would recommend nortons if you are willing to pay a subscription. otherwise, download ad-aware and make sure your windows firewall is on. use the software quite regularly to make sure nothing is getting through. good luck!

Hi Time,
I recommend three programs. All free.
Download AVG anti Virus free here –
http://www.get-antivirus.com/avg-antivirus
Download Microsoft Defender free here - http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
Download AdAware free here –
http://downloads-zdnet.com.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_2-10399602.html?tag=lst-0-1
With those three programs your computer will be pretty secure from viruses, ad ware, spyware & malware.
