Mitosis will not create genetic diversity. It is simply the splitting of a parent cell into two daughter cells. Meiosis contributes to genetic diversity because of mix of alleles. Not only are you getting alleles from two parents, but the chromosomes themselves undergo crossing over, where pieces of homologous chromosomes actually swap places with eachother. They also undergo independent assortment, which is where the pairing of alleles come in to play. So we can have heterozygous or homozygous dominant genotypes and homozygous recessive alleles (you can't have a heterozygous recessive genotype). And this all happens randomly. Its the beauty or ingenuity of nature! Genetic diversity increases the gene pool and is what helps species survive generation to generation even in the event of selection that may be unfavorable to particular members in a species.
