There are many reasons why the number 13 is unlucky, possibly because there were 13 steps up and onto the gallows.
Also it has spiritual connotations being assocciated with tarot cards, and witchcraft.
Many superstitions originated during the medieval times, when people were ignorant and un-educated, and the church was all powerful.
But for some it is very lucky.....
Back in the 18th century, a gaurd on duty at the tower of London, was accused of falling asleep, while on duty.
The penalty for this was death.
When he was on trial, he argued that he could not have been asleep, as he heard "Big Ben" the tower bell chime 13 times.
This was proved to be true, the gaurd was released, and to this very day, it is the only recorded time that the bell has struck 13 times.

Most folklorists believe that the superstition goes back to the Last Supper, where 13 people gathered and two fatalities followed within 24 hours. Also in mythology the number of Norse gods (there were 12) at a banquet that was crashed by the evil spirit Loki (making 13) who killed one of the guests with a poison arrow.
The Egyptians believed 13 was lucky - and that there were twelve steps on the ladder to eternal life and knowledge and to take the thirteenth step meant going through death into everlasting life.
Unreasoned fear of the number 13 is called "triskaidekaphobia".

Some of the negative perceptions of the number 13 may be a result of Christian superstitions. Witches consider the number 13 favorable because it is the number of lunar months in a year. Also, coven membership was typically capped at 13 in the olden days.

My grandmother always considered it her lucky number because it was the day my mother was born, February, Friday the 13th in room 113 no less.
Unfortunately my mother had a different take on this and grew up a very morbid person.

Perhaps it has something to do with Tarot card number 13 being the "Death" card. What is meant, however, is a symbolic-psychological death; not an actual death. It symbolises an ending and a new beginning. In Osho Zen Tarot, the card is called "Transformation", and looks like this:

The no. thirteen is a part of Celtic mythos. It was the Church's battle with Celtic beliefs that brought about the "evil" connotation of the number thirteen.
I don't happen to believe in it, but I do have fun with it.

I don't. The only reason people think it's unlucky is because there were 13 people at the Last Supper.

Its just a number, some feel its lucky others feel its evil.... It can be whatever you allow it to be and it can also be "just a number".... It all depends on YOU.
