I changed the oil and did not tighten the oil filter good. I added 3.8 quarts per manual - I have changed the oil several times before with no problems. Did not realize it was leaking until oil light started coming on. I lost a good amount of oil. I have added 2 quarts and the level barely shows on sides of the dipstick? Do I need to add more, should the oil be a film all the way across the dipstick, near the top dot?

Stop. Before you add any more oil, get under the vehicle and take off the filter. I would almost bet the old gasket didn't come off with the old filter, and you have double gaskets in there causing the leak. Look with a good flash light or drop light, and make sure the metal mating surface is clean and sans any gaskets. Now take a new filter, put a light coat of oil on the rubber gasket, and screw it in by hand (no filter wrenches here please) until it contacts the metal surface of the engine. Now, again by hand, 3/4 of a turn tighter. Stop.

Pull the dipstick, wipe it well, and reinsert it. Pull and read it. Add oil until the oil level reaches the "full" mark on the stick.

Start the engine, make sure the oil light is off. Let it run a minute or two, then check for leaks. If none, you're done, if there is oozing around the filter, tighten it a quarter turn more and check again.

Sorry to say but it sounds like you are a dipstick. Yes, add more. If it is not registering a measurement you probably lost more than you are thinking.
1)make sure its securely tighten now.
2) take a reading using the line on your dipstick.
3) add a quart and take another reading.
4) repeat number 3 until it shows appropriate amount on dipstick.
Your car should hold approximately 5 quarts 4 in the engine 1 in the filter.
Watch the line on the dipstick and don't overfill.
good luck

Ask the people who you obtain it from what they used. it rather is not good to alter to a extreme detergent oil or a man made oil in a extreme mileage vehicle in case you have not been using it appropriate alongside. it rather is going to dissolve deposits and you will in all possibility start up leaking oil from the engine gaskets. however the previous proprietor used, sounds like it replaced into working. especially, get an API spec SG,SH, or SI the better the greater effectual. The producer in all possibility cautioned a 5W-30 while the vehicle replaced into new. If the old proprietor replaced into nevertheless using it, proceed using it. Heavier oil will generate greater warmth from fluid friction than an oil of decrease viscosity. If the engine is leaking oil from the gaskets there is in all possibility sufficient placed on in the mains, rods, and overhead valve rocker assembly the place you may run a heavier weight to gradual the leaks down, on the grounds which you have sufficient clearance between the shifting areas.

if you put it in and didnt wait a few mins b4 you checked the dip stick thea it prolly had not drained into the oil pan yeat so if that is the case you should check it again. if you did not tighten it back up b4 you added the oil then ou should do that check the level and add what is needed. also if the car was hot when you checked it or you had just cut it off it had not had a chance to drain backinto the pan. hope this helps.
