Financially, Bill gates is the wealthiest person on Earth.
When considering a person's net worth, sometimes you really have to examine the status of some of their assets. The English royals may own the crown jewels but they cannot put them up for sale. The crown jewels might be termed restricted assets because they can't be liquidated and they can't be used as collateral. A significant portion of the assets of the English royals falls into this category. This is not to say that those assets are not valuable. The value of those assets is not available to the royals in a financial context.

No, not by a long chalk. Think Bill Gates for starters, but there are plenty of others who leave Charles as being quite small fry in the wealth league tables. I wouldn't mind betting that George Bush is significantly richer than Charles.

Nope sorry, Rowling the author of the Harry Potter books is richer than he is. She surpassed his grand mum a year ago and her newest book hasn't hit the book stores yet nor has the movies hit the theaters. Rowling has done what they said can't be done. She's gone from welfare to the richest person in the world.

I doubt it. Most people say Bill Gates is but I've heard there are Saudi Kings and princes that are worth more than him, only they don't go reporting about all their wealth.

gates...the royal family is quite up there though...btw how isn't the various mideast ruling oil sheiks not the most wealthy??? pumping oil is a lot cheaper than making software...right? To the gent above who thru W into the equation...he is a pauper compared to the royal family...bush really doesn't have that much money...he made a nice nest egg when he sold teh rangers but that was about it...now cheney he has some bucks...

Most of the wealth is state wealth, he cannot just grab some items and sell them on Ebay for some pocket cash.
