My toilet is running and I think I need a flapper. I've heard it's easy to do-it-yourself but I never have. Can you give me step by step directions on how to do this? Also, do I need to look for a certain type of flapper or are they all the same? How much do they cost?

Turn off the water on the toilet. There will be a small water spigot below the tank of the toilet. Remember, turn right to close, left to open.

Flush the toilet to get all the water out of the tank.

Open the lid of the toilet. Your flapper will probably just be made entirely of rubber, and have loops looping over little arms on the fill tube (where the water squirts into the tank). Just work the little loops off the arms. This should be very easy to do.

There will be a chain attached to the handle. Take the chain off of the handle.

Put the whole thing in a ziploc bag, and take it up to the hardware store.

Grab someone who works there, and have them help you find an exact match to the one you already have.

Put on the new one the same way you took the old one off.

Turn the water back on, and replace the tank lid.

All done.

Before you remove the old flapper, remove the tank lid and see if the chain/rubber strap that connects to the flapper is "hung-up". This may be holding the flapper up and causing the water to continue running. Also check that the water level in the tank is about 3/4" below the top of the overflow tube and is not just continually filling with water. Now, for the flapper.
Shut off the water under the toilet tank (valve). Flush the toilet. Remove the tank lid and look at how the flapper connects to the overflow pipe. Some have two little ears on them and they just pull out. Others have a ring that slides down the tube. Remove the old flapper and take it with you to get a new one. They used to be all the same but now have different types so buy the same type you have now. Install it the same as the old one was installed.

Whip off the top to the toilet tank. Now while looking in there, flush and watch what happens until it fills right up. I have had running toilets, and the water gets past a perfectly good flapper.
So, I just flush it and when the water is at the bottom I take my finger and run it on the seat(where the flapper contacts) to feel for any crack or sludge. I then run the same finger on the flapper lip where it contacts the opening, feeling for the same. Rubber deterioates in water over time, so you finger may come out blackish. Not to worry. It takes along time to disintergrate completely.
You may find by doing the finger rub, is good enough and the flapper seals again.

properly, the apparent answer is to examine different hardware shops or plumbing furnish residences for an actual journey of the type flapper you prefer. you will be able to alter the hot one you put in, shaving off area of the plastic arm it somewhat is catching on the overflow tube. As a very final step, you are able to continually call a plumber out to restoration it for you.
