The smell also occurs if the dishes are hand washed. The dishes I use are glazed ceramic - I think. It kind of smells like burned eggs. I have noticed the smell on other people's dishes. I live in Milwuakee, WI. It might have something to do with how the water in Milwaukee reacts to eggs. I don't know.

Try lemon juice or baking soda and let it soak.

That is partly going to depend upon the dishes. If the dishes are ceramic or glass and you use a good dish liquid soap, then the smell should come right off. If not you might try a little bleach to help. Most chemicals won't stick to glass. That is why glass is used instead of plastic for most chemistry experiments. Glass is a very non-reactive substance.

If they are plastic, you may never get the smell out. Plastic is porous. Glass is nonporous. Ceramic is porous, but ceramic is normally coated with a glaze that is basically glass, which of course is non-porous. The porous nature of plastic allows the smell to permeate into the plastic. Once the smell permeates into the plastic, it is almost impossible to get rid of. You can try soaking it in bleach and that might help a little. Actually, if you're plates are plastic and smell bad the best thing to possibly get rid of the smell might be something such as Armor-All that you use on your car vinyl. It is composed of a plasticizer which is what gives plastic its new smell and keeps the plastic from getting brittle. It may have more of a chance to permeate the plastic and cover the smell. Although if you do that, I'm not sure how safe it would be to eat from those plastic plates.

My advice is to stay away from plastic dishes and to use glass or ceramic dishes for the eggs.

Is it just the dishes? Anything else?

I had that problem with anything that touched water. I have a well system. I needed a new well tank. It did not have enough air inside the tank, so the sulfur did not have a chance to dissipate. Every time the water ran in the house , the whole house smelled of rotten eggs. Not pleasant.

sounds more like the dishwasher is not doing its job. Try washing by hand to see if the smell goes away.

Don't use anything plastic to prepare or serve eggs.
