...but i get.... firefoxgoogletoolbarsetup-1.exe...on my desktop with a blank page icon....and it won't open.....what am i doing wrong...am i being an idiot............??

That's the Windoze version, and you tried to get it from the Firefox site. Try this instead:
On the Mac, click on the Blue Apple Icon and choose Mac OS X software... and search for Firefox, download, install and enjoy!!!

You downloaded the Windows version. You must download the Mac version. Any file that ends in .EXE is a Windows executable.
