I have bachelor's in History and a Master's in Secondary Education. I have taught for the last five years, but my position has been cut from next year's budget, which means I'm out of a job. Since I'm now looking for another job, I'm also exploring my options also....

Is there anything out there that pays better than what I'm doing now? I have a wife and 2 kids to feed, and teaching isn't really bringing home as much money as I would like. Any suggestions?

If I were you I'd look into becoming a National Park Ranger. They have 'interpretors' that tell people about nature and history. National Parks are a great place to liuve and raise kids.

You are pretty well locked into the teaching field as far as your education and experience go.

You didn't say if your current job was with a private or public school. Sometimes one pays better than the other.

Another alternative you might look at is moving to another state where teachers are paid more. You might also want to move to a state that has tenure. (At least in the public schools I am not sure about the private.)

I'm not really sure of the educational requirements for pursuing this, but how about working at a library. You have a history degree, so you could be a great asset to those doing research on historical topics. I'm not exactly sure of the requirements or the pay, but it's worth looking into.

You could look into writing/analyzing tests, especially with NCLB. Also, you could go into academic administration or try junior college teaching since you have a master's. If you want to go a completely new route, try government work. It may not pay much, but if you can get into consulting, the big bucks could one day roll in.
