does it run forward or backwords?

In some cars, it will run forwards (usually those with electronic gauges.) In most cars, it doesn't run at all when you are reversing. No car on the market today has it run backwards - these cars haven't been built for many years..

Analog Odometers(distance meter)or mechanical ones as seen in older cars actually do run in reverse when the car is run backwards. The newer digital odometers done run do this when you run the car backwards.

In older cars yes, the newer ones have technology to detect that, to stop people from rolling back the odometer, and selling it for less mileage than it actualy has
