Why do apples grow on trees?

I know I'm past your ten minutes.. but this is the answer..
Road apples taste terrible.
(in case you didn't know.. road apples are a euphemism for horse manure) I've never tasted one, but they just don't smell very good.

The same reason pears, oranges, cherries and bananas do.
