I have been unplugging my ethernet cable from my desktop computer in order to use my laptop occasionally. Now the plastic tab part is about to fall off so I can't risk unplugging it from my desk top. I need to buy a separate ethernet cable (the yellow one from att) to use only for my laptop. Wireless internet is not an option I can afford. When purchasing an ethernet cable, what do I look for in the store? Will it say ethernet because I have looked in the store and see lots of cables but none that say ethernet. What would I look for?

If your not able to go wireless, then purchase a wired router. I bet they're cheap now. You hook up both of your computers... at the same time. Try eBay or pricegrabber.com. They start at $20. the web link below take you to one that is $19.99 free shipping. http://3btech.net/ddi4wibrrofo.html.

What you want is a Category 5 Ethernet cable (sometimes just called Cat5). It will come in different length, so get the length you need. You can get them at any electronic store/department, computer store, Walmart, etc. They are a standard item and should be easy to find.

You can also use a Cat6 cable (which is just a Cat5 with extra twist inside the cable to allowing the signal to travel further). But you don't "need" a Cat6 unless you are going over 300 feet with the cable.

They usually run about $1-$1.50 a foot for the cable (about $10 minimum price).

I work for Misco, and we sell Ethernet cables of any length, but in 1 run 100 metres is the maximum. After that distance you would need to put in a switch to boost or repeat the signal.

just don't get sucked into buying a crossover cable, just a plain old Cat5e. These are for networking two computers together via ethernet and cost a little more, but are not what you need.

The guys are all correct... btw - why not e-mail me? I'm 43 and loyal, considerate, non-drinker, faithful and honest. Never married, don't have kids and not planning on having them. PenPal would be great - no pressure. 5'10", 180, white guy. Hey - I even have a cool British accent - but as I'm British, that's hardly surprising. I expect I'll get a Yahoo warning for writing this - s i g h... lol...
