and by liberals I mean mostly militant atheist liberals, but the religious there also describe themselves as liberal.

Because they both like to jerk people's chains. Liberal's don't believe in God and conservatives don't believe in government.

You might see that phenomena as many right wing thoughts are based from religion. Therefore those who disagree with the thoughts are attempting to get at the root of the behavior.

Maybe it's because there is no line between religion and politics to right-wingers. They're one and the same to them. Someone does their thinking for them, whether it's Karl Rove or Pat Robertson.
