It depends on what country you are in.

Some teach that there are 7, some that there are 5, what country are you in?

In the US, we split Europe and Asia into 2 separate continents for purely political reasons. So we say 7.

In school here in the states, they will teach you that the supercontinent of Pangea broke into 7 different continents.

North America
South America
Antarctica
Europe
Asia
Africa
Australia

If you talk to geologists though, they will tell you that there are actually more. India is actually it's own continent that has collided with the asian continent. I'm sure there must be others...
