I lived in Philadelphia from 1960 to 1967, kept in touch with it until 1978, and have a special feeling for the city.
Here are some sources; if you read in them they will lead you to more. The novels of Charles Brockden Brown, "Arthur Merwyn" in particular. Brown knew Philadelphia intimately and incorporated many details in his fiction. In his "Autobiography," Benjamin Franklin provides many details of Philly. Benjamin Rush, a Philadelphian, was the most famous physician of his time. I am sure books about him and by him will yield a wealth of information. I am reading a book by Milton Flower about John Dickinson, called the Penman of the Revolution, which includes an extensive bibliography; you could consult some of the books listed there. Philadelphia was a leading artistic and cultural center. Books about Charles Wilson Peale (including one by Charles Sellers) , one of the leading portrait painters of the time. PhilIp Freneau edited a newspaper for Thomas Jefferson in the city. Consult a book or two about him. Any book about the making of the American Constitution is bound to have details of the city, about where the delegates lived and how they spent their hours of leisure. See the books of Garry Wills, who knows a great about the America of the 1770s, including Philadelphia. A book about the history of the Friends or Quakers, for it is from them that the City of Brotherly Love gets its name. And finally, Eric Foner's 1976 book "Thomas Paine and Revolutionary America" includes a good deal of the social and political background of the city at that time. All best wishes for your project.
