During the Victorian Era in Britain, there many advances in Medicine and Education, which would not lead me to say it was the "worst" period of English History". Even today you can still read the abundance of great Literature that was written by British authors, male and female, during the Victorian Era.

The Victorian Era is generally cited to be the time of the reign of Victoria, Queen of england.
During her reign, Englad went form being essentially and agrarian, rural society to being highly industiralized.
"Victorian" is also used to refer to the political, cultural, economic and social changes taking place during that time. Among the top cultural changes was the change in the legal status of women; gaining the legal right to their property upon marriage through the Married Women's Property Act, the right to divorce, and the right to fight for custody of their children upon separation.

It was the peaceful reign of Queen Victoria of England who reigned for 60 years without war. She, Prince Albert (her husband) and their children became models for the British population to emulate. Thus it was a period of outwardly being "proper" in dress and manners which led to much hypocrisy on the part of the population, especially those who were considered "nobles."
