My 15y old son has been failing school all year long. I have tried grounding him, no money, no computer time unless for school work, no T.V.,ect. He feels he cannot do the work. He does have an unidentifed learning problem. He can listen to a topic being discussed in class then he can orally answer questions, but when he has to read something he can't or wont. I am at a loss as to what I need to do. Help Please!

Set down with him and do the work together. If you truly feel their is a learning disability you need to go to the school and stand up for him. He may need extra help in the classroom and the school by law has to assist him with this. Don't let it continue to go on. If he is failing it is not only hurting him academically but will also have drastic affects on his self esteem. Do whatever you have to do to get him the help he needs and make sure you stay involved and are an active parent.

I don't think there is much u can do at this late stage of his school life as he will soon be leaving. Try talking to him and tell him how much it's upsetting u and that u want him 2 have a good career when heleaves skool. Maybe going to the doctors can also help with his unidentified learning problem but if they cant they will atleast point u in the right way to get more help.

You got to find him a subject he likes. Try math.

You got to get him curious. All children (and humans) are naturally curious. Ask him a crazy question that "you don't know the answer to" and ask him to look it up online.

If you tell him directly he will automatically be reluctant, human nature, but possibly ask him to look something interesting up for you. Maybe some exciting battle in History (thermopylae, a good excuse would be to let him see 300 if he tells you about the history) or some interesting science question (black holes did it for me).

Once he gets hooked on curiosity, his grades will improve.

Oh,and get a tutor, they help A LOT. Good luck.

my cousin used to HATE school sooooo much. then my aunt showed her documentaries and such about children living in 3rd world countries who would do anything to get an education. it really made my cousin see that she should be very thankful for living in a country where the education is free. and now, when she really feels like she can't handle school, her mom reminds her about the millions of underprivileged children and my cousin remembers not to waste the knowledge she is given. she is now also obtaining an 82% average. amazing from the 68% that she was starting with.

Keep encouraging him and if he keeps failing than just tell him that he will have to repeat his grade while his other friends are in a different class Taking his privileges won't work. just tell him that he is on "Quarantine" sort-of-speak. So he cant leave the house until every thing form school work to cleaning his room is done. I f you try this than be prepared to be called cruel names and get a big attitude!

First take away all sports and extra curricular activities. Also look for a local agency called North Western Human Services or Children's Behavoiral Health, they can evaluate your child and set up a treatment plan in order to help him succeed.

He probably have a personal problem that you don't know about. Why don't you be patient and sit down and talk to him about what's happening in his life and tell him that not paying attention in school will not solve his problem nor help him.

Get him tested, they can give him a special learning plan. He may have trouble remembering what hes told, or understanding what they want him to do.
