Ok well I think and according to my midwife there is some fact to this. My second child was running late and i was desperate. My midwife told me to eat curry and pineapple as it brings on the runs especially when your pregs and that causes softening of the cervics. This is the same as castor oil i think. Any way with my third i ate just pineapple the last week and was told he was not ready at all and had to wait. an hour into a massive bout of what appeared to be devastating i went into labour.
coincidenc emaybe but my midwife believes it works and it did.
also my friend ate a curry at her fav thai bar when she was 81/2 months and she went into labour. she had avoided it all through. if your coming up to your due date or are over due anything is worth a try. get out the curry powder and fresh pineapple and start enjoying.
JUST WANTED TO ADD::: If you normally eat spicy food then it [rpbably wont have this effect on you.

I am not 100% certain that eating a curry at the end of your pregnancy will induce labor, but..... when I was hospitalised for premature contractions, with my first pregnancy for 2 months, I got so sick of the hospital food so my husband brought in some chinese food for dinner(near end of pregnancy). The next day I had a c-section because it brought on labor again and doc decided not to let me wait any longer. Same thing happened with 2nd pregnancy for which I was hospitalised again for 1month and had chinese food 2 weeks before baby due and next day had another c-section. I definitely stayed away from chinese food while pregnant for the 3rd time, LOL!, so you never know, a curry just may work for you.

Eating curry will definitely NOT start labor unless labor is due to start anyway. This wives tale began with the belief that curry usually encourages bowel movement and excessive bowl movement was considered a labor starter. This has since been proven absolutely wrong. Another one that was mentioned was sex, it was believed that the semen would 'ripen' the cervix although this has not been scientifically proven. Sex can trigger the release of oxytocin though it still wont start labor unless it is time anyway. For the person that said they heard a doctor say the curry thing is true, I hope he was laughing when he said it!!

I'm not sure about the curry thing, but I know that I was told to eat something spicy to initiate labor. I went to a Cajun resteraunt, but all to no avail. The only thing I got out of it was a good meal and an expensive food bill! That baby's going to come when he/she is good and ready. There's really nothing you can do other than wait patiently.

I have heard the same thing, but im not so sure. You could also try making love with your partner, I know this has worked for other people I know . It's the orgasim you have the initiates the labour because the orgasim itself is like a contraction and aparantly it gets things moving along.

In this case Indian women should never go past their due dates, yet they do..
No, that is not true.
I'm over 40 weeks along, I eat spicy food all the time (I just like it) and I'm still pregnant.
You will find lot of similar suggestions, most of them are plain stupid, and some are harmful.
Some people say cinnamon, walking, squatting, bumpy ride, sex... etc.. brings on labor, I do all those things on pretty regular basis (just lifestyle that happened to include all of them) and no baby still.

I read a long, long time ago that women in India eat saffron curry to induce abortions. I would consult a doctor.
