Chrysanthemums, "naked ladies", and obedient plant all do their thing in the fall. I have found that in my zone 7 garden I can grow ornamental cabbage year round. I used to think that I could only grow it in the winter but I have some plants that continue to grow in the summer. Some set seeds and I either gather them or let them fall and transplant when they get a few inches tall. I guess the blooming of flowers depends on what zone you are in. In Zone 7, I have lots of flowers like Mexican petunia, canna, lantana, moss, garden phlox, morning glories, oxalis, hibiscus and on and on that bloom till frost. The first flowers that I mentioned don't start to bloom until about Sept. except for the mums and they will bloom in both Spring and Fall. Hope this helps.

I dont know where you live so I will go by my area which is Northern Michigan. Fall would be mums, asters of many varieites, goldenrod which is quite attractive, rose of sharon bushes bloom in late August. My butterfly bushes also bloom in August. Sunflowers bloom in August and last through first frost. Coneflowers are also July through first frost. Marigolds will last until snowfall I think. They are quite hearty.
