My friend's mom seems to get sick any time her daughter gets some attention. For example, each year on my friend's birthday her mom suddenly has to go the emergency room because she's so "sick". When we had her wedding shower her mother became "sick" seconds after we announced her daughter was on her way to the hall. When the daughter wants to attend family functions for her fiance, again the mother gets sick and forces her daughter to stay home to take care of her. What is going on here? Is there a name for this? Does her mom have mental problems?

Well, It seems to me that her mom is very selfish and needs lots of attention. I have a friend whose grandmother acts the same way. One day my friend decided to go to canada and his grandmother randomly got "sick" and have to go to the hospital.

So heres some advice; its okay for her to once in a while to go, visit, and spend some time with her "sick" mother, BUT she shouldn't allow her mother to control her life by randomly becoming "sick"! You should give her this advice, But you need to support your friend in any decision that she makes because it sounds like your friend needs alot of support. =)

It is probably caused by stress, if she is dependent on her daughter ,then it is difficult for her to deal with the fact her daughter has grown up. I think she has lived for her daughter. Is she an only child ? It is classed as inter-dependence.She is not mentally ill, just afraid of change and not being needed.I think when she has grand kids she will be happy. She needs a period of adjustment to adapt, to be able to free herself from the stress syndrome. All she needs is kind words and understanding, she is still a mum.

Sounds like a psychopath to me. Your friends mother MUST be the center of attention. Unfortunately her whole psyche is wrapped up in this fan club phenomenon. Everything you say in your post demonstrates how destructive they can be. May not be criminal, but emotionally devastating for her daughter. Review my website and maybe you can assist in helping your friend understand her mother. I say it is not bad nor good, it just is.

sounds like munchhousens I do not know how to spell it. Maybe she is genuinely getting sick at this time. I am not a doc. but it could be this. it could also be jealousy. I can not spell it to look it up for you.

But it basically sounds like if it is not that she is sick. she is afraid of loosing her daughter. is she an only child. why would her daughter life be setting her off like this.

may be you should be looking at this.

I don't know about mental problems, but she is certainly selfish. i think her daughter needs to just say 'hope you feel well mom' and go do the things that she's planned. Enough is enough.
