Can anybody please tell me if there is anyway that i can opt out of receiving junk mail. A few months ago i heard that you could register or something like that on a website and it would stop you receiving any junk mail. Its driving me mad!!!
Has anybody does this already and if so can i please have the link for this website
Thanx

Sigh - my poor old industry.
Believe it or not we don't want to send mail to people who don't want it. And yes Direct Mail actually does work.
Sorry to hear you (and someone else) is receiving unwanted mail.
For unwanted mail (in the UK) - you can register with the Mailing Preference Service (MPS). Their website is below.
In addition for telephone numbers you can regsiter with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS), again link below.
These lists act as suppression lists. Data oweners are meant to clean their lists regularly. Of course not everyone does, and it takes time to feed through.
When you receive Direct Mail, please just put a note on saying "remove from data list" or "goneaway" post it back (it doesn't cost you anything to retrun a mailpiece) and you should get removed.
Nothing is ever 100% - I'm registered on the TPS and still get the odd sales call!
There is an email version too - but I can't help you I'm afraid!
- Oh one word of advice. When ever you sign anything always read the small print. There will probably be something there about supplying your name to third parties. make sure you say no!

This reminds me of something I heard of once. It's not a way of getting them to stop bringing you junk mail, but it does get back at the mailers!
If they are sending you credit card offers and such with prepaid return envelopes, you can just mail them back all your junk! I would take out anything that has your name on it. I've actually heard they will send you a bill for the postage! Insane I know, and I can't really verify the veracity, but a very good idea, nonetheless!
This way, you don't have the extra trash, and if the junk mailers get enough of their junk back, they may get the message!! :)

The opt out for receiving junk mail anf nuisance phonecalls does NOT work. In the 3 years we have been registered NOT receive them we have been receiving MORE than ever - hardly a day goes by without receiving a couple of things.

I haven't heard of a general website, but I do know on credit card offers, there is a space on the last page usually for opt outs and if you mail it back to them (unfilled!) they have to take you off their mailing list. Sometimes it may take a couple of weeks and you may still get a few before the mailings stop. I'm not sure about the other stuff. Try checking with the post office website that I listed below....i'm with you, i'm sick of getting it too, but my postman said he HAD to deliver it. *sigh*

"junk mail" is the pay day of the US postal service without it.. it would go under.. there will never be a opt out option...
the only thing I can tell you is call the companies and say stop...
OR
collect the mail for a week.. pick one company.. put all the junk for the week in a box with a brick.. to add weigh and send it back to them using the free postage return label that they offer and a note.. saying you will do this every week unless they take your name off the list....
they can do it or pay $5.00 or $10.00 for the brick a week

Use Mailing Preference service. I recently used the telephone preference service (recommended by BT) because of the amount of sales calls I was getting and that was 99% effective. It's a free service- http://www.mpsonline.org.uk/mpsr/
