That's a pretty phat computer system. I put on together very similar to that, except with RAIDed 10,000 rpm hard drives. Running the auqamark 3d test, it doubled the speed of an AMD 64 3.2 ghz with a gig ram/ 7800 gs card. I was impressed with the DUO's.

In my opinion, your not going to see any "double" preformance results. Even if you get a 2 cpu motherboard with dual core processors. You may have about 50% more power with another cpu.

As for the the a 2.4 compared to a 1.8, your going to see a performance increase, but I don't think it's going to be more than 30%. If it's not much more money, I'd pay for the faster chip. I wouldn't pay twice as much more it. 40-50 dollars... sure.

Well, it's the system you really need! First of all I want to tell you some factors. Dual core means you have 2 core of CPU working, that means you can multi taks like editing and the other core work on gaming process (off course, some softwares can take advantage of dual core by using both of them in rendering to make things faster). Your video card is also good enough for rendering some films and 3d animations (off course you might add another card for extra boost!)

For the second quetion, dual core doesn't really mean you're muliplying the speed, it means it can create the task half. Whats the difference? One good example is:

2.4 dual GHz core IS NOT LIKE 4.8 GHz
2.4 dual core IS 2x2.4 GHz merged into one. It means you're like using 2 PC's to run a software.

you have to be careful when you get into the dual core processors because you have to make sure that your OS can deal with a dual core. just because you bought the computer with the dual core doesn't mean it's set up to use both processors. if you have windows XP you need to have the pro edition because you can get a free upgrade to Windows XP Pro 64. or you need to have any version of Vista except the Starter version. I'm not sure about Linux.

it won't be that faster
your's is very good for games and ...
ecept you didn't mention the graphic and video drivers
if they are not good to you you may use externals on you laptop
